| Q. How much influence do I have as a parent? |
|
A. Plenty. According to the American Medical Association, parents have the most significant influence on whether or not teens engage in sexual activity or other risky behaviors. (Journal of the American Medical Association, Sept. 10, 1997, The Adolescent Health Study, 2001) Other studies have shown that 93% of teens surveyed felt that it was important for teens to be given a strong message from society that they should abstain from sex until they are at least out of high school. (“The Cautious Generation,” The National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, April 27, 2000) Modeling healthy choices, continuing open communication, and staying involved with your teen’s peers and activities will help you to guide and positively influence your child and his or her decisions. |
